Black Cherry Apple Ribs – Ribs
As I write this, my husband is sitting next to me chowing down. He just gave me a thumbs up and quite a few moans of pleasure. Needless to say, he really really likes these. And I quote “I love having a different style of ribs instead of the same old bbq version. You get an A++ on this one.”
Minimal preparation in this recipe too. I used my mandolin on the second lowest setting and sliced up the onions and apples in a minute. Easy peazy.
These are for the paleo foodie for sure. Tender, fall off the bone and a touch of sweet. Searing the tops for a minute or two made these perfect. You can absolutely eat them without searing but its worth the extra minute for the extra amount of flavor.

Author: The Organic Rabbit
Recipe type: Paleo, Protein, Slow Cooker
Serves: 2
Ingredients
- 1 slab of ribs
- 1 - 2 bottles (8 ounce) pure black cherry juice (can also use pomegranate or grape)
- 2 cups water
- 2 red onions sliced thin (I used setting #2 on my mandolin)
- 2 red delicious or pink lady apples, cored and sliced thin (I used setting #2 on my mandolin)
- 2 Tbs coconut palm sugar + 1 Tbs more for rubbing
- 1 Tbs salt
- 1 Tbs pepper
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- ½ tsp cumin
- 1 Tbs of ghee (or coconut oil) for searing
Instructions
- Slice apples and onions and layer on the bottom of your slow cooker. Put a layer of onions then a layer of apple, repeat until you've used them all.
- Rub salt and pepper into ribs. Really rub it in there.
- Sprinkle ribs with 1 tablespoon coconut sugar.
- Bury ribs in onion/apple mixture and top everything with juice of choice and water. Cut ribs in half if they don't fit in the slow cooker.
- Sprinkle with cumin, nutmeg and 2 tablespoons coconut sugar, don't stir.
- Cook on low for 5 hours.
- Remove from slow cooker and sear the tops in ghee (or coconut oil) at a high temperature for 1 or 2 minutes. It was easiest to slice the slab in fourths then sear.
- Serve topped with onions/apple mixture.
